Chapter Nine

The last five minutes had been a smash cut of me experiencing things more unbelievable than the last in succession. First, I got blasted out of my car, somehow without the car breaking or getting into any kind of visible accident, and found myself laying in the middle of a highway. After that, a trio of terrifying angels descended from the sky, looking as if they were going to tear me limb from limb.

Maybe they didn’t like people who had the bizarre ability to fly backwards out of their car?

After that, while I was cowering in fear from the mind-numbing scream they let out, a handsome stranger appeared from the trees behind me, flashed me a gorgeous smile, and told me he wouldn’t let anything happen to me, like some scene straight out of a romance novel.

And now a dragon—an actual freaking dragon was descending out of the clouds, beelining for the weird angels, or possibly me and the handsome stranger.

The only thing I could think was that Gracie was mistaken about her delicious, gas station sandwiches, and that I’d actually consumed some sort of hallucinogenic drug and was tripping off my ass. All of that weird talk my family threw my way, not really ever telling me the truth behind the secrets they were obviously keeping, had clearly affected my brain. Was I to believe that demonic angels and dragons and hot, swirling energy guys were real? Because I didn’t.

But then how was I possibly seeing what I was seeing?

“You’re going to get on the dragon, okay?” the hot guy said.

“Um, no,” I replied. “No, I will not be getting on the dragon actually. Thanks, though.”

He turned around and held out his hand for me, and the same brain that had just decided I would not be getting on the dragon, reached up and took it immediately, letting him yank me to my feet. With a strength that was at the same time terrifying and a turn-on, he lifted me clear into the air just in time for this massive dragon, with shimmering platinum scales to scoop down and catch me on its back.

It let out some sort of sharp screech as it passed to which the hot guy replied, “I know!”

My stomach gave out as the dragon lifted into the air with me on its back, carrying me high above the chaos below. Oddly enough, every now and again a car would pass, and didn’t seem to be bothered in the slightest by the insane scene. It was almost as if they couldn’t see what was going on.

I watched as the guy started to gather some of the energy in his hand, almost looking like he was hurting himself to do so, and then the dragon I was on lurched. It pulled back and I clung to its neck as it suddenly blew out a massive burst of silvery fire. It gathered around the scary angels, and the hot guy threw his gathered energy, almost like a baseball, directly at the fire.
